1. The Rutland House Marker
Inscription. Built in 1913 for the homesteading Wiren Family, and purchased in 1928 by Clarence Rutland, this is a typical "Cracker" style home. It features high ceilings, cross ventilation, a hip roof, generous porches, and is elevated on pilings - all common elements of old Florida homes. It features maximized good air circulation. The wood is slash pine. Its resin hardens and protects the wood from insects and water. Uncle Clarence, as he was known, purchased the home in 1928 for $2,000 and lived in it until shortly before his death in 1982, when it became the first building to house the Sanibel Historical Museum. The home was moved to the village from its location on Periwinkle Way, at the western corner of Periwinkle Park.
