1. Stoyer's Dam Marker

Inscription.

Stoyer's Dam was known as Bittle's Dam in this March, 1906 image. Marcus Bittle established the dam in 1881 to establish an ice supply business, including erecting an ice house in the area where you now stand. Earl Stoyer opened his automobile business in 1922 on the opposite side of the dam, purchasing the body of water in 1930, renaming it Stoyer's Dam. Note the wooden bridge spanning the overflow and Bittle's warehouse on the far right. The buildings on the northeast corner of Columbia and Berne Streets look quite similar today.
