Sanibel in Lee County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
The Packing House
| | Sanibel Historical Museum and Village | |
This building is a replica of what a packing house looked like in the 1890s when Frank Bailey established one on Matthews Wharf. This replica was built using old photos and memories. The surrey (in the shed), the wagon and the delivery truck behind the Post Office represent island transportation until the ferry was established in 1928. The surrey would have been pulled by mules, as horses could not tolerate the island's mosquitoes. This building is not open to the public and is used to house artifacts not currently on display in the museum.
