Inscription. One of Pittsfield's earliest schools occupied a spot about 100' out in the river. In 1826 voters at Town Meeting granted mill owner James Joy permission to construct a bigger dam, thus creating a much larger mill pond. The school was moved further back from the river and later became the original Rectory of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Master Odiorne taught here for many years. Among his pupils were John Swett, the famous California educator, and Samuel G. Drake, one of the country's first antiquarians.

Erected 1999 by Pittsfield Historical Society. (Marker Number 27.)
