Inscription.
Stanton McClellan Child was born in Wisconsin in 1863 and moved to New York at the age of 17 to work as a pattern maker (iron casting) with his father and brother. By 1901, he had worked his way up to become a wealthy New York industrial engineer and owned several companies, including the Stanton M. Child, Inc. engineering firm on Broadway. Along with his business partner Ferdinand d'Humy, Mr. Child founded the Ramp Buildings Corporation and patented the d'Humy Motoramp system, the first engineered ramp design for multi-level parking garages. Mr. Child held many patents including sliding casters for chair legs and removable locking wheel casters. He also improved the design of foot rests on metal chairs and stools.

Stanton and his wife Laura were frequent visitors to Mount Dora. Mr. Child became a permanent resident in 1939 and purchased this property and the house across the street at 352 N. Alexander Street.

In 1940, Mr. Child demolished the old R.C. Tremain and Son Hardware Store that stood on this site so he could enjoy the view of Lake Dora and the beautiful sunsets from his house. Mr. Child then deeded the land to the City for a public park. Once referred to as Child Park, the park was renamed Sunset Park in 2013 as originally designated by Mr. Child.
