Anne Frank lived in hiding from 1942 to 1944 in Amsterdam, where her family, observant Jews, took refuge during the Nazi persecutions. The Franks were denounced, arrested and then deported.

Anne Frank and her sister Margot died in March 1945 in the Bergen Belsen camp.

During these two years in hiding, Anne Frank wrote a book of testimony, published for the first time in 1947.

The Diary of Anne Frank is today one of the most famous books in the world.

On May 13, 1944, Anne wrote from her hiding place:
"Our chestnut tree is completely in bloom, from top to bottom, it is full of leaves and much more beautiful than last year"
This chestnut tree is a graft of the actual chestnut tree of Anne Frank. It was planted during the inauguration of the Anne Frank garden on June 20, 2007 by

Annelies Marie "Anne" Frank (12 June 1929 – c. February or March 1945) was a German-born Jewish girl who kept a diary documenting her life in hiding amid Nazi persecution during the German occupation of the Netherlands. A celebrated diarist, Frank described everyday life from her family's hiding place in an Amsterdam attic. She gained fame posthumously and became one of the most-discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust with the 1947 publication of The Diary of a Young Girl (originally Het Achterhuis in Dutch, lit. 'the back house'; English: The Secret Annex), which documents her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944.
