Inscription. Dewey K. Hickok (1824-1890) of Morrisville was an inventor and a dealer of patent rights. On July 19, 1887, he received a patent for his new invention, a washing machine. Mechanically creative, Hickok also patented a number of other inventions, including a clothes dryer. Hickok was a distant cousin of Wild Bill Hickok. His adventurous spirit took him on two long whaling voyages in the Pacific Ocean. His journeys were documented in a log now in the collection of the Morrisville Historical Society.

A shop at the foot of High Street is to be used by D. K. Hickok, who will engage in the manufacture of his newly patented washing machine. The new engine was given a fair trial on Monday, with F.B. Livingston foreman. It was not altogether satisfactory, because of some leaks, which, however, can be easily remedied. The engine threw a good stream 150 feet. It also threw a good stream with 400 feet of hose, over the highest chimney on the foundry. Another trial will be given soon. – From More About Morristown 1860 to 2005 by Rebecca Skillin and Francis Favreau
