1. Elkmont Marker

Inscription. European Americans first settled along Little River in the 1830s. They grew corn and apples and kept bees for honey. With the advent of mechanized industrial logging, Elkmont grew into a small town to support the Little River Lumber Company in the early 20th century. Spectacular scenery and moderate temperatures made the area a magnet for recreational activity, and the logging railroad provided transportation. Vacationers who came to enjoy the mountains eventually established two social clubs and built summer homes, even before logging operations ceased.

In the late 1920s, the idea to preserve these mountains took hold, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park was born. Today, natural and cultural resources abound to make your visit memorable.

(Photo #1) Hikes on the Little River and jakes Creek trails are easy day trips suitable for all ages. Connections can be made from here to backcountry trails and the Appalachian Trail. Permits are required for back country camping.
