1. Grand Beginnings Marker
In 1884, Audubon Park was the site of the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition. Featuring exhibitions celebrating the 100th anniversary of the cotton industry in the United States, the exposition opened on December 16, 1884.
One of the great exhibits at the exposition was Horticulture Hall. It was the largest greenhouse in the world and the only building that was used after the exposition closed. It was destroyed in a 1915 hurricane. At the time, the main exhibition hall was built over 33 acres and was the largest building in the country.
The exposition attracted over one million visitors and ended in May, 1885. The only remnant of the event is a chunk of iron ore located on the golf course. Despite legend, this ore was part of the Alabama State exhibit and is not a meteorite!
After the exposition closed due to financial losses, efforts to improve the Park accelerated.
