Mons in Hainaut, Wallonia, Belgium — Northwestern Europe
Palace of Justice/ Palais de Justice
The law-courts were built in 1848 on the site of the refuge of Cambron Abbey. This refuge can be seen on an engraving from the first half of the 19th century. It was built around 1316 to shelter the monks of the abbey in times of war. In 1717 the Cambron monks sold the building to the Sovereign Council of Hainault in exchange for an annual allowance.
The law-courts (in neo-classical style) were designed by the architect Huriau. Originally they grouped together all the jurisdictions, some of which have moved into various houses spread out in the town in the last decades.
Erected by City of Mons.
