1. Window To A New America Marker
Inscription. In the decades following the American Revolution, James Monroe and other leaders set out to define and expand the new nation. Highland offers a window into what this meant for the many lives that intersected here—political elites, enslaved workers, overseers, family and relations, artisans—and how they all contributed to a larger national story.

Ventana A Una Nueva America

Asking Questions is the key to understanding the past. How does Monroe's plantation reflect the story of agriculture in Virginia? How was his home "lost and found" to history? What challenges and choices faced America after the Revolution?
