1. Clerk of Court’s Office Marker
Inscription. Soon after East Florida was transferred from Spain to the United States, the St. Johns County Clerk of Court was established here at the Governor's House.

The Clerk's responsibilities included recording court activities, property deeds and other transactions completed in everyday life. With St. Johns County including all land from the Suwannee River down to Key West, citizens had to travel considerable distances to record documents.

The Clerk of Court recorded the first deed in the new U.S. Florida Territory on September 13, 1821. Today the Clerk of Circuit Court and County Comptroller serves citizens at the St. Johns County Courthouse.
