1. The Castalia Quarry MetroPark Marker
Inscription. The Castalia Quarry MetroPark originally operated as the Wagner Stone Company's Quarry #5, beginning in the early 1870s, as a limestone quarry. From 1870-1929, the quarried limestone was primarily used as shoreline rip-rap, in glass making, railroad ballast, and other general building purposes. Early quarry operations utilized horses, steam engines, and grueling manual labor to blast the stone and carry it up to the quarry ridge where a series of crushers broke up the stone. It was then delivered by wagon or railroad.

In 1929, the Great Depression ended quarrying activity in Quarry #5, but when construction began on the Ohio Turnpike in 1954, work restarted with upgraded machinery. The foundations of both the Edison and Bay Bridges used stone from the quarry. The quarry was permanently closed when major construction projects were completed by the mid 1960s.

In 1987, Wagner Quarries donated part of the quarried property to Erie MetroParks, and Erie MetroParks purchased the remaining property to create the Castalia Quarry MetroPark.
