Inscription. In 1943, during World War II, this was the site of Thayer General Hospital. The hospital was named for Dr. William Sydney Thayer (1864-1932), who entered Harvard College at age 16 and was a brigadier general in the U.S. Army during World War I. Built at a cost of $3,500,000, the hospital had over 1600 beds and served over 17,000 soldiers. German POWs from Tullahoma's Camp Forrest were assigned manual labor jobs at the complex. In 1963 Thayer closed, and by 1966 the site was cleared.
