1. Cultural Exchange Marker
Trading posts like this one hosted the trade of both goods and ideas. Indigenous peoples exchanged furs and food items for goods like metal pots, wool blankets, and firearms. The furs were shipped to American and European cities for the hat making and fashion industries.
Oliver Faribault was assigned a location by the government to trade with the Dakota people of Sakpe's village. Oliver and his wife Harriet built this home and trade post near the river 14 years before Minnesota became a state.
