Irvine in Orange County, California — The American West (Pacific Coastal)
Irvine Valencia Growers
The packing house, formerly located on this site, was constructed in 1929 by the Irvine Valencia Growers Association. Here, the prize winning oranges of the Irvine Ranch were cleaned and labeled before being shipped around the world. The railroad spur that picked up the oranges for shipping was called Kathryn, in honor of Irvine's late daughter. Success of the packing house facility lent to its expansion in 1932 and 1944. Several other significant additions were made to the packing house, including the construction of the Precooler Building in 1938 and the Refrigeration Building in 1939.
The adjacent concrete wall commemorates the location of a portion of the packing house foundation. The "upright" timbers were salvaged from the original packing house and are reflective of the vertical wood posts which supported the first floor of the structure. These elements were constructed in 2004 in association with the construction of the Jeffrey Open Space trail.
