Described as a showman and salesman and called Gussie, this brewing magnate built St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch into the largest brewery in the world by 1957 as its company chairman. Under Busch's leadership, production at the St. Louis facility alone reached the ten million barrels-per-year mark in 1964. By 1973, Anheuser-Busch had aggregate beer sales of 26,522,000 barrels.
James Cash Penney
1875-1971 BORN IN HAMILTON, MO
This businessman and entrepreneur founded J. C. Penney Company. In 1912, 34 stores were in operation, primarily in the west. By 1920, the company had expanded nationwide with 120 stores. In less than 10 years, the number of stores reached 1,400. Penney's large income enabled him to be heavily involved in many philanthropic causes during the 1920s.
