Oslo's greeting to the future
As part of the celebration of the City of Oslo's 1000 years jubilee in the year 2000, the citizens were invited to place postcards, letters and other items in time capsules in the Town Hall square on New Year's eve 1999. The greetings should be stored for a 1000 years and be passed on to the citizens in the year 3000.

The Oslo Port Authority was charged with the task to make and locate a time capsule with all the greetings in a place where it could be preserved for such a long time.

All cards and letters are placed in gas-tight. laminated bags. The laminates are of plastic and aluminium. At the time of packing, the oxygen in the bags was removed by use of Argon 4.6 gas. After this operation the bags were vacuumed and welded in order to remove as much as possible of oxygen and humidity.

The finished bags were irradiated in the Gamma irradiation facility of the Institute for Energy Technology in order to sterilize the content. This was done with the intent to prevent fungus, spores and bacteria from attacking the content of the bags.

The capsule itself is made of Titanium grade 2. This material has probably the capability to resist 1000 years of corrosion and deterioration. The welding is done by use of Argon cover-gas to prevent oxidation. Argon 4.6 gas is used in the packing to remove oxygen and humidity. The atmosphere inside is Argon 4.6 gas.

On May 15, 2000, St. Hallvard's Day and Oslo's birthday the time capsule was placed in the Kavringen Lighthouse located in the middle of Oslo's harbour basin.
