The tales of the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm would be unthinkable without her: Marie Hassenpflug. Together with her sisters Jeanette and Amalie, she contributed the most famous stories to the world-famous collection, which was first published in
1812: King Thrushbeard, The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs, Thumbling's Journey, The Little Table Set Itself, Sleeping Beauty, The Golden Key, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Little Brother and Little Sister, and Puss in Boots. They form the "Hanau Fairy Tale Trail". Many of the "Fairy Tales from the County of Hanau" are based on French sources. The Hassenpflugs had Huguenot ancestors.
Marie Magdalene Elisabeth Hassenpflug was born on December 27, 1788 in the Hanau court building in Altenhasslau. Her father Johannes was appointed mayor of Hanau Neustadt in 1789. The family then lived in the house of the Lossow grocery store on the market square at the corner of Lindenstrasse until 1799. From that time on, the Hassenpflugs maintained a close acquaintance with the Grimms (Wilhelm Grimm Sr. was city secretary of the old town of Hanau and county clerk of the Bücherthal office; Marie's brother Ludwig, later minister of the Electorate of Hesse, married Lotte Grimm in 1822).
In 1799 the family moved to Kassel, where Johannes Hassenpflug had been transferred as a financial supervisor. Here the sisters met the Brothers Grimm again in 1808 and were part of their romantic circle.
On August 21, 1814, Marie married Hans Friedrich von Dalwigk von der Schaumburg, who was stationed as a captain in the Kurprinz Regiment in Hanau, and lived in
the castle in Hoof near Kassel. The couple had four children; their son Hans Ludwig Alexander was born in Hanau in 1817. From 1820, her husband as chamberlain and Marie as lady-in-waiting were part of the entourage of Maria Friederike von Anhalt-Bernburg, a daughter of the Elector Wilhelm I and Caroline of Denmark, first in Wabern Castle, then in the Hanau City Palace and finally in Bonn. Marie had to hold the mentally ill duchess's hand in the evenings and tell her fairy tales until she fell asleep. After her husband's death in 1850, Marie lived in Kassel. She died there on November 21, 1856.
