Inscription.
Wat maakt iemand een pionier? Visie, ondernemerschap en durf. Mr. J.P.

What makes someone a pioneer? Vision, entrepreneurship and courage. Mr. J.P. Amersfoordt, the second mayor of Haarlemmermeer, had these qualities. In 1854, when the polder still consisted of wet clay, he bought 200 hectares of land. Here he established a large, modern agricultural company: the Badhoeve. The experimental model farm with the latest machines had a great influence on the mechanization of Dutch agriculture. Together with his wife Hermina Maria Dijk, composer and singer, he received high-ranking guests, including various heads of state. A nice detail: the Badhoeve stood on the spot where the hydraulic engineer Cruquius took the first sounding for his plan to drain the Haarlemmermeer.

Amersfoordt saw De Badhoeve as a pilot farm. He wrote about his experiences to advise others, even when the results were negative, and he introduced new agricultural and livestock farming methods and various agricultural machines that contributed to the mechanisation of agriculture in the Netherlands. The enterprise included stables connected by narrow-gauge rails, large (carriage) barns, a riding school (often used as a dining room for groups of visitors and as an emergency hospital during the cholera epidemic in 1866), a smithy, a carpenter's workshop, stone workers' houses and a house built as a mansion, connected to the cowshed via the churn house (cheese factory).(Submitted on December 25, 2024.)
The farm has disappeared, but the churn house managed by his wife Hermina is still there. The comfortable home was located exactly on the spot where the famous hydraulic engineer Cruquius once took his first sounding for his (unimplemented) reclamation plan. Among the many visitors who were stylishly received at De Badhoeve with pomp and circumstance were various heads of state, including Queen Sophie, the Emperor and Empress of Brazil, Prince Jerτme Napoleon and also Ulysses Grant, former President of the United States.
