Inscription. The Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies Medical Division was one of three hospitals the Atomic Energy Commission set up after World War II to explore the use of radiation in cancer treatment. Physicians and scientists-built scanners and teletherapy units for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In addition to work in nuclear medicine, this facility also offered programs in immunology, biochemistry, cellular biology, and cytogenetics. Out of this facility grew the Radiation Internal Dose Information Center and the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site.
