In this one-room rural schoolhouse, a single teacher taught first through eighth grade. Lessons focused on the practical skills of basic reading, writing and math. Teachers prepared students for farm life, trades or apprenticeships. Many students ended their schooling here in eighth grade.

Teachers were often women. It was a good procession at a time when job opportunities for educated women were limited. This profession was an opportunity for women to work outside the home and exchange knowledge and ideas.
