David Roy. . , David Roy, a former Junior Main Street member and Eagle Scout, was the guiding force behind the “Hole in the Wall” park. When it was time for David to begin working on his Eagle Scout project, he considered many possibilities, finally deciding on a downtown park for Newkirk. After many frustrations and stumbling blocks, the Newkirk Community Historical Society offered David the opportunity to utilize their two lots that had lost their buildings. The area became affectionately known as the “Hole in the Wall.” , David started working on this project in 2003 and was able to complete it during June 2005 through October 2005 while he was a senior in high school. The total cash outlay for the park was $2,212.83 with most of those funds being raised through the sale of aluminum cans by Sue Roy. , David appeared before many of Newkirk's civic organizations asking for volunteer labor and funds. The Newkirk Lions Club, the Newkirk Women's League and St. John's Lutheran Church all assisted with this endeavor as did Newkirk Main Street, Newkirk Junior Main Street and the Newkirk Community Historical Society. David's parents, Don and Sue Roy, were staunch supporters during this project. , Not only did David earn his Eagle Scout award, but Newkirk Main Street also named him a Main Street Hero in 2005. In a period of time when volunteers of any age are sometimes hard to find, we salute this young man as a great volunteer. What an example for all of us! He is truly an Oklahoma Main Street hero.
