Red Rose Garden Club. . , The Newkirk Red Rose Garden Club, organized May 21, 1951 with nineteen charter members, is a member of the National, State and Northwest District Councils of Garden Clubs. The purpose of the club is to promote the study of soil conservation, natural resources, birds and plants, engage in civic projects, and to encourage citizens to beautify yards and improve Newkirk parks. , A variety of civic projects have been sponsored since the inception of the club. The group maintains the Memorial Garden at the cemetery and in 1979 began the Memory Lane tree planting project at the cemetery. , In celebration of the Centennial in 1993, Newkirk organizations were inspired to preserve and beautify the community. The Garden Club made monetary donations to the Save Our Buildings project, for installation of lights on Maple Boulevard, and for the base of the “Land of Hope” statue. , Each year the club sponsors an annual school poster contest on “Litter Control, Conservation and Pollution.” It also donates to the school science department for a student to attend “Space Camp.” Life for residents of the Newkirk Nursing Center has been more exciting because of contributions of birthday corsages, boutonnieres and special gifts at Christmas all furnished by the Garden Club. , Since 1984, Newkirk citizens have enjoyed the plantings in the flower beds at the City Building. In 1994, shrubs were added to the flower beds to coordinate with the Main Street Pocket Parks. Newkirk Red Rose Garden Club believes that our city is the responsibility of all residents, and that the appearance of our city is a reflection of the standards of all who live in it. We are pleased that our projects have added to the appearance of Newkirk. It is our hope that these efforts have helped generate civic pride and that Newkirk will truly be a Garden Club City. , The charter members of the Newkirk Red Rose Garden Club were Mary Cowles, Gertrude Chope, Anna Denton, Trudy Gillis, Inez Gibson, La Verne Horner, Imogene Leavitt, Maple Lierman, Vera Mrazek, Barbara McDowell, Clara Morgan, Maude Perry, Stella Pratt, Minnie Roberts, Bertha Saylor, Mrs. Logan Scott, Anne Shinn, Lola Stevens, and Wilda Schaefer.
