Inscription.

The Colombischlössle was built from 1859 to 1861 in the English neo-Gothic style according to the plans of the Freiburg architect Georg Jakob Schneider (1809 - 1883). It stands on the former St. Louis bastion, one of the few remaining parts of Vauban's 17th century city fortifications. The villa was named after its owner, Countess Maria Antonia Gertrudis de Colombí y Bode (1809- 1863).

The countess was born in 1809 as the daughter of a Spanish merchant and diplomat and a noblewoman with German and English roots. After the death of her husband, she decided to settle in Freiburg and commissioned the construction of her villa, in which she lived until her death in 1863.

In 1899, the property was purchased by the city of Freiburg. From 1909 to 1924, the city's antiquities collection was on display here. From 1947 to 1952, President Leo Wohleb ruled the state of Baden from Colombi Castle. The Colombischlössle Archaeological Museum has been displaying its treasures

here for almost 30 years.

The Archaeological Museum takes visitors on a journey through the millennia, from the oldest works of art in southern Baden to medieval Freiburg. The villa contains Paleolithic female statuettes, evidence of Bronze Age metal production and precious items from Celtic princely graves such as the oldest glass bowl north of the Alps. Roman achievements in handicrafts, everyday life and the military are vividly presented in newly designed exhibition rooms. Regional finds from the early Middle Ages and the Alamannic treasury round off the museum's repertoire, while models and educational stations convey the peculiarities and living conditions of each era.
