The Landing in Shakopee in Scott County, Minnesota — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Milk or Meat?
The few cows brought to Minnesota by early settlers were raised for both meat and milk. In the 1870's, as farmers diversified their crops, they began raising specific breeds of cattle to meet production needs. Farmers chose breeds of cattle for meat production that could grow quickly by eating cultivated food. Farmers kept dairy cows in part to provide skimmed milk for other livestock to consume. Cattle numbers continued to grow across the state and by 1940, cattle were in every county in Minnesota.
What Do They Eat?
These cattle eat grasses and other pasture plants. They may also eat feed like corn, grains, and hay.
