To Our Knowledge …
Spring Water was used by the Ferryman since 1642 when this property was recognized as "Ferry Landing." This spring water remained surfaced and used in 1640 when needed by the adjacent Walke Tavern, located on this property. The floor is paved with handmade clay bricks, formed and baked on this plantation. In 1735 Spring Water was used for the 3rd Princess Anne Courthouse. The Cistern was built in 1888 by the Barnetts. It held water both from the spring with a divider for rain water. A pail was used for dipping the water for house use. The Howrens, in about 1942, put a pitcher pump in the East Wing wash house. Brick structure added to the westside of Courthouse in 1830 is Ferry Plantation House.
