Inscription.

The sound of church bells ringing through town invited people to gather together. As new settlements were established, a church was often one of the first public buildings built. They were as diverse as the settlers who built them, and even the smallest towns usually boasted multiple churches – Catholic, Protestant, etc. – in reflection of the variety of religious traditions and beliefs present.

New Immigrants often formed communities around shared religious beliefs, electing to settle in areas where their own traditions were well established. Churches, synagogues, mosques and other houses of worship continue to unite new arrivals to Minnesota today.

Built: 1868 by the Methodist Episcopal congregation
Original Location: Shakopee, MN
Building Name: Bloomington Ferry Church

This Methodist Episcopal church was moved across the Minnesota River twice: once by ferry in 1900 and once by barge in 1970.

Did You Know?
Congregations were formed before a church was built. They met in homes until the building was complete.
