In preparation for the excavation work for the Forum Hanau, archaeological investigations were carried out below ground level on Freiheitsplatz from 2008 to 2013.

Remains of the old town bastions built under Counts Philip II and Balthasar von Hanau Münzenberg between 1527 and 1534 were uncovered, documented in detail and finally dismantled. The loophole (or embrasure) comes from the remains of a foundation of a bastion that was demolished at the end of the 18th century under Hereditary Prince Wilhelm of Hesse-Kassel.

. Excerpt (in translation):
In preparation for the excavations for the Forum Hanau, below ground level archaeological investigations were carried out on Freiheitsplatz from 2008 to 2013. Remains of the old town bastions built under Count Philipp II of Hanau-Münzenberg between 1527 and 1534 were uncovered, documented in detail and finally dismantled. An impressive embrasure from the foundation remains of the bastion was removed and thus preserved for posterity. It has since been restored by stone restorer Jens Engelhardt and is now professionally positioned on the new Freiheitsplatz.

The Zonta Club Hanau supported the restoration with 1000 euros. Mayor Claus Kaminsky recently inspected the "archaeological island" with ladies from the service club.

"The loophole will certainly be a popular and important stopping point on city tours to provide information about the history of the old town bastions and thus the history of the town square," said the mayor...
