1. Traumatic Brain Injury Marker

Inscription. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) often occurs with other war injuries, but sometimes is not diagnosed as easily. TBI is caused by an outward force to the head or a violent movement of the head. TBI occurs during explosions and other types of warfare. During these events, the brain is violently moved in the skull causing damage to the brain and bodily functions. Not everyone realizes they have a TBI, even when the symptoms are chronic and impact their daily lives. TBIs can hide in plain sight for veterans because they are largely invisible injuries.

TBI is classified as mild, moderate and severe, as determined by loss of consciousness, length of memory loss and responsiveness after the injury. Mild injuries result in no persistent symptoms, or cognitive or behavioral risks, while the severe injuries can result in patients remaining in a coma or vegetative state.

While PTSD and TBI are diagnosable and in some cases share similar symptoms, the two are not the same but can occur at the same time and from the same traumatic incident in warfare. PTSD and TBI have similar symptoms such as mood swings, anger, depression, anxiety

and irritability. According to VA, many people who sustain a TBI will also develop PTSD.
