True Cost of the Invisible Wounds of War
| | Freedom Park | |
TBI is classified as mild, moderate and severe, as determined by loss of consciousness, length of memory loss and responsiveness after the injury. Mild injuries result in no persistent symptoms, or cognitive or behavioral risks, while the severe injuries can result in patients remaining in a coma or vegetative state.
While PTSD and TBI are diagnosable and in some cases share similar symptoms, the two are not the same but can occur at the same time and from the same traumatic incident in warfare. PTSD and TBI have similar symptoms such as mood swings, anger, depression, anxiety and irritability. According to VA, many people who sustain a TBI will also develop PTSD.
