Das römische Straßennetz
Ein Netz von rund 100.000 Kilometern gut ausgebauter Fernstraßen war Garant für die Macht Roms, war Grundlage für Kommunikation, Handel und Verwaltung im Imperium Romanum. Die weit verzweigten Staatsstraßen verbanden Provinzen, Metropolen, Städte und Siedlungen mit Italien und Rom.

Köln, eine der wichtigen römischen Stadtgründungen nördlich der Alpen, war von Anfang an zentraler Verkehrsknotenpunkt. Von Köln aus erreichte man über Jülich, Maastricht und Bavay die Atlantikküste bei Boulogne-sur-Mer auf der Via Belgica. Von Köln über Trier und Lyon führte die Agrippastraße an die Mittelmeerküste. Über die Limesstraße gelangte man von Italien über die Alpen bis zur Nordsee. Sie durchquerte das römische Köln in direkter Nord-Süd-Achse. Einige Abschnitte dieser Römerstraßen sind bis heute im Stadtbild und in der Landschaft sichtbar.

Cologne to the Atlantic coast via Jülich, Maastricht and Bavay. Via Agrippa led to the Mediterranean coast via Trier and Lyon. Travelling along Limesstraße from Italy, it was possible to reach the North Sea via the Alps. Some sections of these Roman roads are still visible to this day in both town and country.
