1. Guilford Manufacturing Co. Marker

Inscription.
This house was once a wing of the 1849 Guilford Manufacturing Co. factory, which made steam engines & machinery. The company was bankrupt in three years, and by c.1865 Simeon B. Chittenden converted the wing into a dwelling; massive framing timbers remain exposed and intact. This riverfront site was the westernmost end of the original 1639 homestead lot of Judge Samuel Desborough, son-in-law of Henry Whitfield. In the early 1800s, it contained the shipyard and home of James Leete & son.
