Jahrhundert v. Chr., nachgewiesen werden.

Human occupation along Rhine and Mosel is 800,000 years old. Finds from the surroundings of the St. Kastor Basilica go back to the Neolithic, to about 5000 B.C. The settlements consisted of large post houses with living quarters and

stables. About 3500 B.C. the so-called Ehrenbreitstein was settled. After 1000 B.C. the promontory began to serve the local elite and was fortified with embankments and ditches. It represented an ideal location for controlling the river mouth, its passageways, and the ore deposits in the hinterland. Finds reveal which islands and gravel banks were drawn on to cross the river. Fords used over the millennia locate the early prehistoric passageways in the mouth area. On slightly higher ground between the river mouth, the basilica and the old town, evidence shows the existence of farmsteads from the Celtic Iron Age (7th-3 century B.C.).
