Elizabeth Marrero Garden. . This garden honors woman leader Elizabeth "Betty" Marrero for acting as a social link that brought together the Williamsburg-Greenpoint community, and the energy and passion she demonstrated through her work. Betty was an active community volunteer for many years. From her first floor apartment and porch in the Neighborhood Women Houses, accompanied by her faithful dog, Rocky, she functioned as a neighborhood ambassador, talking and listening to everyone, offering wisdom and friendship. A member of Neighborhood Women Renaissance Housing Board for ten years, she also worked with Vista/Americard as a gardener. She took a special interest in maintaining the Neighborhood Women Houses garden, which was named in her honor. Betty took charge of cooking for the annual community meeting as well as all the Neighborhood Women events. She volunteered as the You Can Community School program, where she encouraged youth to have self-respect and stay in school. Her memorial service in 2008 brought more people out than any other meeting. In her youth, she was known for her spectacular dancing with her partner Jose.
