Inscription.  Italian:

(AD 81-96) completely rearranged the area occupied by the domus of Caligula, changing its orientation. He also built the structures, preserved to a great height, that still occupy this corner of the Forum adjacent to the Palatine. This complex consisted of four communicating chambers: the large western Hall, whose identification as the temple of the deified Augustus is still controversial; a smaller room to the east, now the atrium of Santa Maria Antiqua, maybe the so-called library ad Minervam; the vaulted quadriporticus accessed from the current atrium; the three chambers to the south of the quadriporticus, where we still see significant remains of a painted decoration consisting of red squares and tondos, dating to the Hadrianic period (AD 117-138) or slightly later. The whole complex is closed on the eastern side by a Ramp that wounds its way up to the imperial palace above. The Domitianic rooms were renovated on various occasions over the centuries and remained in use until a late period, when they were turned into the Santa Maria Antiqua complex.
