Decorazioni in Stucco

Stucco Decorations
The environment under the arch of the Bridge of Caligula has exceptionally well preserved the stucco decoration that characterized the ceilings of the rooms on this side of the Domus Tiberiana. (A)
The decorative scheme on these ceilings is geometric and is divided into three large central panels, square in form, with at the sides T-shaped fields interspersed with small squares decorated with floral motifs. The design of the vaults was completed by a row of hexagons, of which only a part is preserved.
All the geometric fields described here were surrounded by cornices in imitation of the marble coffering that decorated the representative rooms. The large central panels were decorated with inscribed tondi, decorated with central figures, now no longer visible: traces of the color spread before the application of the central figures have been preserved. The ground of the three panels was red, that of the inscribed tondi was blue. The T-shaped fields are decorated with central tondi, bordered by cornices. The small panels have a rhombus inside with five-petalled rosettes. (B)
The row of rhombuses, finally, is decorated with floral motifs or figurative scenes. These repeat a pattern consisting of a male figure standing before a seated woman. In one of the hexagons we can make out the male figure of Hercules, identified by his characteristic lionskin and club; in the hexagon opposite we see a male figure with a helmet, probably a warrior. The female figures, on the other hand, are difficult to interpret. (C)
Even if in more simplified forms, the panels of the stucco decoration are again found in the geometric patterns that characterize the mosaic floors of the rooms that open onto the loggia. (D)
