Defending Freedom
1899 – Present

Our soldiers have been found in harm’s way, even when there was no declared war. They died around the world fighting hostile forces in times of peace, between waes, and during missions of peacekeeping on foreign soil. In 1899, it became necessary for the United States to keep a military presence in the Philippines following the Spanish American War. In 1916, Pancho Villa raided U.S. citizens in New Mexico. General John J. Pershing’s large force pursued Villa back across the border in a conflict called the Mexican Punitive Expedition. For more than four decades, the Cold War claimed the lives of American Servicemen and women on land and sea, and in the air. Our military fought in Bosnia, Grenada, Lebanon, Panama, Somalia, and other remote areas around the world. In 1991, Operation Desert Storm in Iraq became a prelude to the conflicts in the area a decade later.
