The Arch of Constantine and Flavian Amphitheater
Inscription.
"View of the Arch of Constantine and Flavian Amphitheater, called the Colosseum"; 1771, from Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome)
In the late afternoon light, Piranesi establishes his viewpoint in the north-eastern corner of the Palatine, on the edge of the vineyard of the Abbey of St. Sebastian, which would later become property of the Barberini princes. From this terrace, our architect places the amphitheater in its topographic context, at the center of the valley created between the slopes of the Palatine in the foreground, the slopes of the Oppian Hill (with the ruins of the baths of Titus and Trajan) at the top left and the Caelian Hill to the right, at the base of which the viewer can make out the gated walls enclosing the Cornovaglia and Paganica vineyards, later acquired by the Apostolic Chamber and the Colonna family, respectively.
«Piranesi's PArCo» is a tour through the PArCo of the views captured by the great Venetian architect, organized in celebration of the 300th anniversary of his birth.
Erected by Il Parco di Piranesi.
