Substructures of the Barberini Vineyard Terrace
Inscription.
In the early imperial period (1st century AD) the corner of the Palatine facing the Colosseum valley was transformed into an artificial terrace supported at the sides by tall massive containment walls, reinforced by vaulted rooms built up against them. On one side a whole row of these rooms survive, built in brick and dating to the 2nd century AD; they may have been used for commercial and administrative activities. From the marks of the vaults left on the containment wall we can reconstruct three levels of rooms linked by stairs. The terrace was extended in the Severan period (AD 193-211) with a more advanced containment wall that incorporated the rooms, of which few remains survive today.
