Duitse Militaire Begraafplaats
The trench line from which the chlorine gas was released on 22 April 1915 stretches, as the crow flies, across a distance of six kilometres or so (8km of trenches) between Stampkot near Steenstraete and Halfwegehuys [Halfway House) between Langemark and Poelkapelle. This trench formed the winter line in 1914-1915; the place to which German troops were able to advance in the spring of 1914 during murderous fighting that was later called “The Infanticide of Langemark.” The trench line passed through the area currently occupied by the German cemetery. When the cemetery was designed in 1932, the trench lines were outlined using 49 concrete blocks. The three remaining hideouts were restored (receiving a new 10 cm-thick concrete shell).
