On Dec 5th 1492 Cristopher Columbus arrived to this part of the island during his first voyage to the New World. They called it La Hispaniola and this port Puerto Plata named after the silver-like appearance of the nearby mountain Picco Isabel de Torres which reflects the sunlight and looks like silver.
In the 17th century French explorers arrived. The Treaty of Ryswick officially divided the island with France establishing Saint Domingue now Haiti.
The Founding Fathers led the fight for the country's independence and achieved it on February 27 1844.
