Hon. Sybil Ione McLaughlin, MBE, JP
(August 24, 1928 - May 10, 2022)
Among the many milestones in her remarkable life was her appointment as the first Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 1991 until her retirement in 1996.
She joined the Civil Service in 1945 and was appointed Clerk of the Legislative Assembly in 1959 - the first woman in the Commonwealth to hold this post.
She served as secretary of the Cayman Islands Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association from 1965 to 1980.
A founding member and former president of the Business and Professional Women's Club, she also served for many years as the organist at the South Sound and North Side United Churches.
Declared a National Hero in 1996.
