1. Auburn side of the marker
Auburn. The Grand Trinity of classic automobiles—Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg—each played prominent roles in racing history. Established in 1900 by the Eckhart family, early models successfully competed in the popular speed and reliability trials of the day. Later Auburns used powerful Lycoming engines to set speed records at Bonneville, Muroc and Atlantic City. In 1930, an Auburn racecar competed in the Indianapolis 500, which was paced by a Cord L-29.
Cord. Young E.L. Cord built racecars from old cars and sold them for a profit. As an entrepreneur he developed some of the most spectacular cars of their age. Impressed by the engineering of Harry Miller's Indy 500 dominating racecars, Cord purchased the production car rights to the front-drive technology and created the landmark Cord L-29. Cord's racing connection went beyond design: competing often, and setting many speed and endurance records at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
