Ploegsteert near Comines-Warneton in Hainaut, Wallonia, Belgium — Northwestern Europe
Le Last Post
Last Post is sounded at 7 pm on the first Friday of each month in remembrance of, and as a tribute to, the dead who fell in the Great War. 11 November, Armistice Day is celebrated with special events by the Ploegsteert community and the first Friday in June is set aside for a ceremony, attended by the Australian Ambassador and other dignitaries commemorating the opening of the Battle of Messines on 7 June 1917.
And winds and songs and all the joys that are,
And known once, and as a child that tires with playtime,
Leaped from them to the elemental dust of war.
I have seen blood and death, but all has ending.
And even horror is but made to cease.
I am sickened with love that lives only for lending,
And all the loathsome pettiness of peace.
Give me, God of battles, a field of death,
A hill of fire, a strong man's agony.
