Inscription.
Col. Algernon Sidney Buford, long-time president of the Richmond & Danville Railroad, was first buried in this square. Later, family remains were relocated to the more fashionable Greenhill Cemetery, which had opened in 1863.
 
Erected 2000 by Garden Club of Danville.

Regarding Buford Plot. The Marker incorrectly states that Col. Algernon S. Buford was first buried in Grove Street Cemetery but was later relocated to Green Hill Cemetery. It was actually Buford's wife, Emily, who was first buried in Grove Street Cemetery before being relocated

4. Emily Buford
The first wife of railroad president Col. Algernon S. Buford, Emily Whitmell Townes Buford, died in 1859 and was buried in Grove Street Cemetery. Later, her remains and monument (seen above) were relocated to Green Hill Cemetery.

Two of railroad president Col. Algernon S. Buford's children, Lizzie and Susan, died young and were originally buried in Grove Street Cemetery, prior to being relocated to Green Hill Cemetery.

Though Col. Buford is not buried in the new Buford Plot in Green Hill Cemetery, a street adjacent to the Cemetery and railroad is named for him.
