On May 26, 2013, members of Darius-Girenas American Legion Post 271 dedicated this marker in memory of
U.S. Army Medal of Honor recipient for his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty, on August 17, 1944, near La Lande France. Additional awards, the Croix de Guerre, France's highest military honor, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, seven battle stars.

Regarding Ssg. Stanley (Bendorius) Bender. Stanley Bender was born in West Virginia but later moved with his parents to Chicago. He enlisted in the Army in 1939. On August 17, 1944, serving in France as a staff sergeant with Company E, 7th Regiment, 3rd Division, Bender destroyed two German guns by himself and later led his squad in destroying a German strong point. He was awarded a Medal of Honor in February 1945. Bender moved back to Chicago after the war and was a member of the Darius-Girenas Post before moving back to West Virginia, where he lived until his death in 1994. A 1954 bridge on the West Virginia Turnpike was named after Bender; it was torn down in the 1980s.
