Daniel D. McArthur
Historic Parade Grounds at Town Square
Growing up in St. George, the City's 32nd Mayor, Daniel D. McArthur recalled the parade grounds being used as a playground for children attending Woodward school. With the exception of the Dixie Academy, Woodward school and the LDS Tabernacle, many of the buildings used for recreation and education purposes throughout the 20th century on this square no longer exist.
One of McArthur's greatest accomplishments during his 20 years as mayor aside from the many improvements in the downtown area, was the creation, of the St. George Town Square. During the planning phase of the Town Square, McArthur was adamant that the historic parade grounds be restored and preserved to be used by the public as a community gathering place once again. Because of his dedicated service and love for community and the citizenry of St. George, this ground will forever be named in his honor.
