West Virginia Wesleyan's Oak Forest. . , In September 2008, landscape architect Richard Boggs first envisioned that an oak forest be established here in the open area to the west of McCuskey Hall. The plan was enthusiastically and unanimously endorsed by Wesleyan's Landscape Committee, appointed in November 2007, consisting of representatives of faculty, staff, and students, led by Dr. Katharine Gregg, Professor of Biology., Even as a number of major landscaping projects took place in subsequent years, the committee continued its discussions and plans for an oak forest. Thanks to dedicated assistance from the Office of Development and gracious donations from students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends, the first planting of three oak trees took place in October 2021, as the beginning of a beautiful addition to our Home Among the Hills., These oaks will grow into long-lived, majestic trees that will give shade in the hot summers and gorgeous fall color in the autumn. Their leaves and acorns will sustain many species of wildlife: birds, small mammals, and insects like larvae of moths and butterflies, which are important pollinators. As the forest matures, lawn will gradually be replaced by a layers of leaves that will give homes to many creatures unseen but crucial to the web of life., Dedicated on Earth Day, April 22, 2022, With this plaque we show our deep appreciation for the donors who have made this oak forest a reality., David McCauley, in memory of Harry Wallace, Graham Kenneweg '52, and G.
