of three signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence (M.D.I.) buried at Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The others are John Flennegin and Henry Downs.

The MeckDec (local vernacular) continues to be disputed as a precursor of the July 4th Declaration of Independence signed in Philadelphia. Signed on May 20, 1775, it remains one of two dates listed on the state flag of North Carolina.

The Daughters of the American Revolution had placed plaques at all three grave sites. However, the one at Morrison's grave site is missing.
