UNESCO-Welterbe verpflichtet
Seit 1986 zählen die Igeler Säule mit acht Trierer Römerbauten zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Das in Deutschland einzigartige Ensemble römischer Monumentalbauten macht die Bedeutung der Region in römischer Zeit deutlich.

Das 23 Meter hohe Grabdenkmal gehört zu den am Besten erhaltenen Grabdenkmälern im römischen Reich. Sein reicher Reliefschmuck mit Szenen aus dem Leben der Tuchhändlerfamilie der Secundinier ist bis heute von bemerkenswerter Qualität erhalten geblieben.

Es gehört heute zu den zentralen Aufgaben, den Erhalt dieses Denkmals zu gewährleisten. Die 2015 abgeschlossenen Restaurierungen wurden im Auftrag des Ministeriums der Finanzen vom Landesbetrieb Liegenschafts- und Bau- betreuung, Niederlassung Trier (LBB) und unter fachlicher Beratung der Generaldirektion Kulturelles Erbe Rheinland-Pfalz durchgeführt.

The 23-meter-high funerary monument is one of the best-preserved funerary monuments in the Roman Empire. Its rich relief decoration with scenes from the life of the Secundini cloth merchant family has been preserved to this day in remarkable quality.

One of the main tasks today is to ensure the preservation of this monument. The restoration work, which was completed in 2015, was carried out on behalf of the Ministry of Finance by the State Property and Construction Management Office, Trier branch (LBB) and with expert advice from the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage of Rhineland-Palatinate.
